Here we have three Kuna women who are elders in their San Blas Island community. This is a ceremonial/celebration mola. All of these women are seen drinking a special drink called chicha fuerte, the drink of choice for special occasions and celebrations among the Kuna people. The attention to detail in this mola is astounding. I love the thought that was put into showing the clothing and accessories worn by the Kuna women, all with tiny thread work. You can see a mola blouse on each woman along with the long traditional wrap around skirt. I also love how the artist was sure to depict the balloon sleeve that is always a part of the kuna women's ensemble. The tightly sewn thread worn on the arms for bracelets is shown here, as well as the traditional red and yellow head dress. The women are drinking from simple clay cups made from natural material found in thier land. This mola has so much detail and color and just wonderfully depicts the women in their own culture.
